Fine Art Printing in Lisbon: From Digital Artwork to Paper

There is a moment when an artwork stops being just an image on a screen and becomes a physical object. Paper has texture, weight and tone. Ink interacts with its surface. Colours become slightly different, details feel more tangible, and the work begins to exist in a space rather than on a display.

At Levö, we work with fine art printing in Lisbon both for our own projects and for artists, illustrators, photographers, galleries and independent brands.

But what actually makes a print a fine art print?

What is fine art printing?

Fine art printing is a high-quality printing process that combines pigment-based inks with carefully selected papers. Unlike standard digital printing, the goal is not simply to reproduce an image, but to preserve its colour, detail and character while creating a physical object designed to last.

This makes the process particularly suitable for photography, illustration, digital art, limited editions and other works where colour reproduction and material quality are important.

The difference can often be felt before it is fully understood. A good print has depth. Dark areas retain detail, subtle tonal transitions remain visible, and the surface of the paper becomes part of the image itself.

Why paper matters

Choosing the right paper is one of the most important decisions in the printing process.

The same artwork can look remarkably different depending on the surface it is printed on. A textured cotton paper can soften an image and give it a more tactile quality, while a smooth matte surface can make graphic shapes and sharp details feel more precise.

At our Lisbon studio, we work with a focused selection of papers rather than an overwhelming catalogue of options.

Hahnemühle Photo Rag 188 gsm and 308 gsm are 100% cotton papers with a soft, slightly textured matte surface. They offer excellent colour depth and detail and work particularly well for photography, illustration and artworks with subtle tonal transitions.

MediaJet Archival Matt 230 gsm has a smoother matte surface and balanced contrast. It is a versatile choice for posters, graphic works and art editions.

We also offer a 180 gsm coated paper for projects where a clean surface, strong contrast and a more accessible production cost are priorities.

There is no single “best” paper. The right choice depends on the artwork and on how you want the finished piece to feel.

Pigment inks and colour

Paper is only half of the process.

Fine art printing uses pigment-based inks, which are valued for their colour reproduction and longevity. For artists and photographers, this becomes especially important when producing editions or works intended to remain on display for years.

But accuracy does not simply mean making a print look exactly like a backlit computer screen.

Screens produce light. Paper reflects it.

Part of the printing process is understanding this transition and finding the balance between the original digital artwork, the characteristics of the chosen paper and the final physical print.

From file to physical artwork

We are a small studio, and we see that as an advantage.

Rather than treating printing as an entirely automated process, we prefer a more personal approach: looking at the artwork, understanding the intended result and choosing materials accordingly.

Sometimes that means selecting a softer paper for a photograph. Sometimes a smoother surface makes more sense for a graphic poster. Sometimes the first print reveals something about the work that wasn't obvious on screen.

For us, every print is an individual piece rather than simply another file in a production queue.

Fine art printing for artists and photographers in Lisbon

Lisbon has an active community of artists, photographers, illustrators, designers and independent studios. Having the printing process nearby makes it easier to experiment with materials, produce small editions and make decisions based on physical samples rather than only specifications on a website.

Our fine art printing service is intended for both individual works and editions.

We print for artists creating limited editions, photographers preparing their work for display or sale, illustrators bringing digital work onto paper, galleries and curators, and brands developing visual editions.

You don't need to arrive knowing exactly which paper or specification you need. Tell us about the project and we can help determine an appropriate approach.
